Snow skiing, summer sports opportunities and instruction is provided to physically and developmentally disabled adults and children. Work may be with individuals with any type of disability, including the deaf, blind, amputees, developmentally disabled, learning disabled, paraplegic, quadriplegic, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, and other congenital disabilities or combinations of disabilities. Scholarships are available for low-income individuals.

Crippled and burned children are provided with assistance. A child can be referred to the hospital representative by anyone who is aware or becomes aware of a child in the neighborhood, church, or school who could use Shrine care. To refer a child to the hospital representative, call the number listed.

Even Start aims to break the cycle of limited literacy in Montezuma County by having parents and children learn simultaneously. This program’s purpose is to extend learning and enrich language development in youth five years old and younger. The program is designed to raise the education levels of both adults and children. Parents can obtain their GED or participate in ESL (English as a Second Language) and other educational classes while their infant, toddler, or preschooler participates in early literacy development and school readiness activities. PACT (Parent and Child Together) time in interactive time for parents and children. Services are available to parents with an educational goal and at least one child under age 7.

Case managers assist families with resolving family crises as well as with daily living, help in developing family plans and budgets. Referrals to local agencies are provided. Home visits are also conducted.

Families in Archuleta, Dolores, La Plata, Montezuma, and San Juan counties are assisted in seeking financial resources, with the goal of keeping the individual with disabilities living in the family unit. Eligibility is determined by state regulations, which require using results of psychological testing which may indicate the presence of developmental disabilities including cognitive or other developmental delays.
