Judicial branches of municipal governments deal with violations within their respective city boundaries of laws and ordinances committed within the city limits which usually involve traffic, shoplifting, disturbances, etc. Duties included filing records of cases, collecting costs, penalties and fines, and holding judicial hearings. Complaints by citizens must go through the Police Department or Sheriff’s Department. Court costs vary as assessed.

Protection and law enforcement is provided for the citizens of Cortez. Community outreach and educational programs are averrable including bike and other safety issues, career formation, and drug & alcohol information. One week notice needed for preparation of educational programs. CPD participates in prevention programs such as Crime Stoppers, DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education), and fingerprinting for children. Any resident of Cortez can receive assistance from CPD.

Books, magazines, and other materials are acquired which meet library objectives, further library programs, and satisfy the needs and interests of the community. Resources are available for families to help with parenting and child education issues. Residents of Montezuma County and Dolores County may use the library and its services. Other residents may apply for use with a $20 deposit. 25-cent per day is charged on overdue books.

This program provides a method for anonymous reporting of information pertaining to a crime that has happened or is going to happen in Montezuma and Dolores counties or BLM land within these counties. A reward of up to $100 is possible if the information provided results in an arrest or conviction. This is not a reporting program for crimes in progress. In that case, call 911.

Multi-level prevention programming is provided through three levels of community and school training to target destructive behaviors in youth 2-18. Ongoing workshops and prevention services for families of middle and elementary school youth are offered in the Four Corners area.
