The judicial branch of county government handles traffic cases and minor criminal matters including DUI, proof of insurance, theft, trespass, under-age drinking, assaults, and other matters. Preliminary hearings are held in more serious criminal matters, and some civil actions and small claims are also handled. In civil actions and small claims, residents can file their own complaints or initiate action without the assistance of an attorney. Court clerks cannot give legal advice, but some actions can be handled by filling out forms available from the clerks in cases such as restraining orders, name changes, money damages/demands, forcible entry, and detention. Filing fees vary with action.
